Spirit of Assisi ~ Action on the 27th of Each Month

A Global Invitation to Monthly Intentions, Prayers, & Actions for a Peace that is Just, Secure, and Life-giving for All

On the 27th day of each month, the Archbishop of Assisi sends out a call for inter-spiritual and inter-religious prayers, intentions, and actions for peace ~ each community and tradition expressing their prayers and intentions around the same topic, and expressed according to each participant's own faith tradition, community or personal practice, or in an interfaith or interspiritual event or gathering.

This monthly letter is a continuation of the historic event of October 27, 1986, when Pope John Paul II called for representatives of many religions to gather in Assisi, as a peace initiative, and to "come together for prayer" (rather than "praying together" from one text), each in their own way, format, style, and language.

The September 27th letter for 2022 highlights the peace calls of the 7th Congresss of World and Traditional Religions, held in Kazakhstan in September 2022.

These calls to peace were issued by a wide cross-section of faith communities and religious leaders, including Pope Francis, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Ahmed Al Tayyeb; Metropolitan Antonij of Volokolamsk, head of the Department for External Relations of the Patriarchate of Moscow; Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel David Lau; and Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel Yitzhak Yosef; and Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem.

Communal silence was their shared language of prayer.

Spirituality Beyond Borders participates in honouring this call, and invites you to visit this page for attached and downloadble monthly updates for the 27th day.

The ‘Spirit of Assisi’ can be summarised in these three points: 1) the inestimable value of peace and the responsibility of the world’s religions towards achieving it;  2) the awareness of the importance of prayer in obtaining the gift of peace;  3) the necessity of getting to know and to respect other human beings, irrespective of their faiths.  (Allegro Renzi)
